Are you ready to talk? ...........In the comfort of your own home

It takes courage to take that initial step and pick up the phone to seek counselling.

You may be feeling desperate to talk, in complete confidence, and trust,

to someone who is on the outside and not involved.

I work in a person-centred way, which emphasizes the quality of the counsellor and client relationship

You will feel comfortable in the knowledge that you will be able to take it at your own pace.

About me

I began my working life in nursing.
I am a fully trained Registered General Nurse, therefore familiar with the medical approach having worked within the N.H.S.
,and the private sector, latterly as an agency and bank nurse in General Hospitals,  Nursing Homes and Hospices throughout South Wales.

In the 'between years' (ten years) I specialized in helping people with weight issues and  eating problems - Accredited by Gloucestershire Health Authority. My groups were small and individualized. I am  therefore able to help  facilitate better eating habits and help clients implement  less fluctuating weight management.

The above enables me to have an insight into the stress and trauma people experience when faced with the unexpected. Life is never straight forward.

I now have my own private practice 'A Time to Talk in South Wales' and continue in a voluntary capacity with Cruse Bereavement Care -  specialising in working with bereaved children and young adults.

Referrals for adults and children are made either from primary or secondary health care centres.i.e. General P practioners, Health Visitors,Social Workers and self-referrals.

Clinical Experience

I trained with Cruse Bereavement Care- specializing in bereavement counselling for children and young adults.
My work includes adults who are seen on a 'one-off' basis and those needing further sessions of counselling.

Additional information.

1 am committed to continuously looking as how I can increase, deepen and expand my skills and knowledge, with ongoing studying. This includes regular attendance at professional workshops and conferences.

With bereavement - sometimes only one session is needed - to be reassured that the feelings my clients are experiencing are normal and to have it affirmed that they are not going mad!

My approach -

Counselling provides a regular time and space for you to talk about your troubles and explore difficult feelings and in complete confidence and this is an important part of the contract between us.

Counselling is an opportunity to reveal hidden secrets that over time have become a burden, and to allow you to express your fears and worries in confidence. This can be quite liberating, and it is usually far easier to talk to a trained counsellor than to family or friends.

My job is to help you think through your situation and express your feelings in a safe and confidential environment, where there is trust and acceptance. Understanding is important and often talking through issues can lead to an increased awareness of how you relate to other people and situations, and what your life patterns are.

All issues are dealt with in a safe and empathic, non-judgemental and ethical environment.  There are some exceptions which allow all counsellors to work in a responsible manner.  My policy is to inform clients of any action I intend to take, beforehand.

A verbal contract is talked through regarding fees, number of sessions required, cancellations etc.

The counselling process is dependent to a large degree on the relationship between client and counsellor. As with all relationships, the counselling relationship takes time to develop - usually over a number of sessions. Person-centred counselling is not a quick fix, but given time and commitment, it can enable a client to live a more fulfilled life.

I normally see clients for an initial assessment, taking general details and giving clients an opportunity to outline their difficulties, in their own home  and in the near  future, will offer the opportunity for the clients to visit me.
Generally, I recommend an initial block of six weekly sessions and review after four sessions.
Sessions usually take place once a week. Making this regular commitment gives you a better chance of getting to the heart of your difficulties.
There is no obligation to continue counselling further if you do not feel ready.

With bereavement-sometimes only one session is needed - to be reassured that the feelings you are experiencing are normal, and that you are not losing your mind !

FAQ:

What is the purpose of 'Person centred' counselling and how might I be able to help you?

The core belief of this method of therapy is that each and every client is accepted for whatever they bring to the session, unconditionally and with empathy.
Therefore I shall not offer you advice but will attempt to provide you with a "safe" space to explore your difficulties, thereby enabling understanding. I believe that with understanding of those difficulties comes the potential for change.

Person centred counselling provides individuals with the time and space to explore and discuss the issues which may be troubling them. I provide a safe, confidential, supportive and non-judgemental environment. I work in a client centred, humanistic way and believe that clients may gain greater understanding and awareness of their difficulties and concerns.

Person-centred Counsellors aim fully to accept their clients as unique individuals with inner human potential to solve their own problem. Many clients have said that they have been helped to accept themselves more happily, simply from being able to talk about the way they are feeling without any worry of being judged.

Person-centred counselling - means letting the client take the lead in what is discussed.
